Why is my first book series about consent? - And why it matters so much!

Consent is one of the most powerful skills a child can learn.
It shapes how they understand their body, their boundaries, their relationships and their rights. It influences their confidence, their safety, their choices and their ability to respect the choices of others.
And yet, for many children, consent is never explained clearly.
It isn’t talked about early enough, consistently enough, or in a gentle, day-to-day way that they can genuinely understand.
That is why the very first Safe Storybooks series focuses on consent and body safety.
Because everything else — emotional wellbeing, healthy relationships, digital safety, resilience — rests on children knowing:
I am allowed to say no.
I am allowed to change my mind.
My body belongs to me.
I can ask for help if something feels wrong.
I must also respect someone else’s no.
These are simple ideas, but they have lifelong impact
Why Consent Was the First Topic I Chose.
In my work as a safeguarding consultant and as someone who supports vulnerable children directly, I have seen again and again how gaps in a child’s understanding of consent can lead to serious difficulties later on.
Children who don’t understand consent are not “bad.”
They are not trying to cause harm.
They are often confused, overwhelmed, or repeating something they have seen without understanding what it means.
And sometimes, children simply have never had anyone explain consent in a way they can make sense of.
When children don’t understand:
how to say no
how to recognise someone else’s no
how to notice discomfort
how to protect their own boundaries
how to respect another person’s boundaries
…it can lead to decisions that affect their whole lives, and the lives of others.
I have worked with children who were deeply hurt because someone ignored their boundaries.
I’ve also worked with children who caused harm because they didn’t understand that boundaries existed in the first place.
Both situations break your heart.
And both could have been prevented with earlier, clearer, gentler teaching.
There are children I still think about years later — children who were capable of kindness, empathy and change, but who weren’t given the tools or understanding soon enough.
Children who needed someone to explain consent in a way that made sense for them, at the age when it mattered most.
This series exists because I don’t want other young people to end up in similar situations.
Not through malice, but through misunderstanding.
Not through intent, but through not knowing.
Consent Is Not Just About Safety — It’s About Life.
Consent is not only linked to sexual behaviour.
It’s about choices, autonomy, respect, and confidence.
When children understand consent, they learn:
to trust their instincts
to recognise when something doesn’t feel right
to communicate clearly
to ask for help
to treat other people with empathy
to take responsibility for their actions
to think before they act
These are skills that influence every relationship they will ever have.
Consent education is not a single conversation — it’s a lifelong foundation
Why I Created Safe Storybooks consent series.
I created this series because I believe that:
Every child deserves to feel safe in their own body.
Every child deserves to understand that their choices matter.
Every child can learn empathy, respect and boundaries — when taught early and gently.
No child should ever feel shame for not understanding something no one taught them.
No parent or teacher should struggle alone with how to explain difficult topics.
My goal is simple:
to make consent education warm, natural, accessible and trauma-informed — for families, for schools, and for home-educated children.
The books, guides and workbooks are designed to fit into daily life.
You don’t need special training.
You don’t need perfect words.
You just need a safe, supportive resource to start the conversation.
This series gives you that.
A Hope for the Future.
If we can help children understand consent early, we give them something far bigger than a rule or a safety message. We give them:
the confidence to use their voice
the ability to recognise their feelings
the understanding that their choices matter
the skills to build healthy, respectful relationships
the empathy to consider how their actions affect others
the courage to speak up when something doesn’t feel right
These are not just lessons for childhood — they become the foundations of adulthood.
Consent education shapes how children grow into teenagers, partners, friends, colleagues and community members.
It shapes how they treat others, how they allow themselves to be treated, and how they navigate the world.
If we can plant these seeds early, we can help create a generation that is kinder, more respectful, more emotionally aware and more able to make thoughtful choices.
A generation that understands that “no” is not rejection — it is communication.
A generation that understands that boundaries are not barriers — they are safety and respect.
A generation that understands that consent is not a one-time question — it is continuous, mutual and rooted in care.
This is why the Safe Storybooks Consent Series exists.
This is why consent is the very first topic I chose.
And this is why I believe so strongly in making these resources available to families, teachers and home-educators.
If even one child feels safer…
If even one family feels more confident…
If even one young person thinks twice…
If even one person learns empathy for the first time…
…then this work has already made a difference.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for being part of this journey.
